Exposure, not inventory
The board does not manage vendors; it manages exposure. Lead with the numbers that matter: how much risk sits in the third-party portfolio right now, how that has moved since the last meeting, and which concentrations would hurt most if they failed. A register proves you are doing the work. An exposure view proves you understand what the work means.
Three things every board update should answer
- Are we more or less exposed than last quarter, and why? The direction of travel matters more than the absolute number, because direction is what the board can act on.
- Which suppliers are material enough that their failure becomes our problem? Name them. Five vendors the board recognizes beat five hundred rows it does not.
- What decision do we need from this room today? Budget, a risk acceptance, an exit plan for a concentration. If there is no decision, say so; that is also information.
Make it live, not rebuilt
The reason board reporting takes a week in most programs is that the number is assembled by hand from tools that do not talk to each other. Someone exports the register, someone reconciles it with the monitoring tool, someone builds the deck, and by the meeting the figure is already stale.
When exposure is computed from the same record your team works in every day, the board view becomes a filter, not a project. You pull it by entity, business unit or framework, and the figure you present is the figure your analysts trust, because it is the same one.
